Looking to the narratives that drive the creation of place – the mega-identities of cites and industry – ALEX YOUNG builds a floating sanctuary on the Wynantskill which serves as the headquarters for C.U.S.S. (Center for Utopian Socialist Studies). Deftly vacillating between irony, criticism, and praise,Young creates a functioning library and meeting place inspired by the strange and manic world of Niagara industrialist King Camp Gillette. Gillette stands as an ambivalent figure, credited for fathering the ‘disposable society’ while simultaneously creating a vision of a complex utopian city that has foreshadowed a sustainable and communal way of life often sought after today.
